Former Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano following the passage of a new law by the State House of Assembly. This law abolished the four additional emirates created in 2019 by the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
While no official statement has been released regarding Sanusi’s reinstatement, sources close to the matter revealed that he is expected to be in Kano on Friday. According to these sources, Sanusi’s reinstatement is automatic with the passage of the bill, pending the governor’s assent.
The State Assembly recently passed the ‘Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024,’ which dissolves the additional emirates and restores Sanusi as the Emir of Kano. This bill was passed after its third reading, as announced by the Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the state governor, Tuwita, on X.
The initial law creating the additional emirates was first amended in 2019 amidst a conflict between then-Governor Ganduje and Sanusi, leading to Sanusi’s deposition. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s victory in the recent election reignited calls for Sanusi’s reinstatement, with Yusuf having promised to restore the old Kano Emirate system.
