Rivers Political Crisis: LGSC Prohibits Officers from Appearing Before Assembly

The Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, through a circular signed by Ebirieneuket Nteile, its Director of Information and Communications, has prohibited officials from the 23 LG areas in the state from attending sessions of the Rivers State Assembly.

According to the circular, any staff member who “disobeys or violates the instructions will be dismissed from service accordingly”.

The circular reads, “I am directed to inform you and all officers of the 23 Local Government Councils in Rivers State not to honour/appear before the Members of Assembly or any purported invitation by anybody or group of persons in any guise without the permission of the Acting Chairman- Local Government Service Commission”.

It’s been suggested that the recent development could be linked to the ongoing political turmoil in the state.

Rivers State has been embroiled in political unrest, notably between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The State House of Assembly passed the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill into law on April 22, overriding Fubara’s assent. This decision was made during the 159th Legislative sitting led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule at the Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt.

On Tuesday, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) instructed assembly members to initiate impeachment proceedings against Fubara.
