Micheal Uzondu, aged 31, from Amimo in Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, was apprehended by the State Police Command for purportedly possessing a firearm.
According to the police, the arrest occurred during an intelligence-driven raid on a known criminal hideout at No 1 Chidiobi Street, Site and Services, World Bank Layout. Operatives from the Command’s Narcotics Unit conducted the operation, resulting in the detention of the individual and the seizure of one locally-made pistol along with suspected hard drugs found in his possession.
According to the statement issued by the state police spokesman, Henry Okoye, on Tuesday, “On interrogation, the suspect confessed that he bought the said pistol from a gun-runner at Ugirike in Ikeduru LGA and intends to use it for his protection.
“An investigation is ongoing, efforts are underway to apprehend the dealers and manufacturers of the locally-made guns. The suspect will be arraigned in court upon completion of a comprehensive investigation.”
While calling on the residents of Imo State to support the police with credible information to curb the proliferation of illicit firearms and ammunition which poses a serious threat to the overall peace and security of the State, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to enhancing the safety and wellbeing of all and sundry in the State.
