The Kano State Police Command has revealed that it has discovered some individuals who are using Islamic sects as a cover to cause chaos during the Eid el-Fitr festival. The Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Usaini Gumel, disclosed this during a meeting with Islamic clerics and representatives from the five emirate councils on Monday.
He assured that the police had quickly taken action against criminals who were trying to blend in among law-abiding citizens to cause harm before, during, and after the Eid el-Fitr celebrations. However, he stated that Kano is the only state where none of its citizens have been kidnapped or held captive by bandits, which he attributed to the vigilance of security agencies.
The police commissioner mentioned that they have identified some individuals who are hiding behind the Qadiriyya Islamic sect in an attempt to cause disharmony. He reported that he had spoken with the leader of the sect, Sheikh Qaribullah Nasiru Kabara, and that he had dissociated himself from them. He further stated that the leader had authorized the arrest of anyone attempting to disrupt the peace.
The police commissioner also hinted that the command’s intelligence units had uncovered another set of politicians who were dissatisfied with the current state of affairs or had not received appointments and were determined to create uncertainty. He directed police officers to arrest any individuals found with weapons or attempting to create chaos.
Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Bashir Albasu, representing the Emir of Bichi, commended the police commissioner for maintaining peace in Kano.
