Abia community raises alarm over abandoned NDDC projects

On Thursday, the community of Owo Ala Asa in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State voiced their concerns regarding numerous abandoned projects undertaken by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) within their vicinity.

Highlighting the various unfinished ventures, the community cited the Owo Ala water project, initially awarded by UNPADEC and later inherited by the NDDC, along with the Ngwaiyiekwe-Owo Ala Unuadienwe Road, Obehie-Owo Asa-Obegu Road, Umuokwor Owo Ala Road, and several electricity projects.

During a meeting with Eruba Dimgba, the representative of Abia State on the Niger Delta Development Commission board, Chief Han Okpokiri led the community members in expressing their grievances. They emphasized that the abandonment of these projects has inflicted considerable hardship on the community, particularly given its status as an agricultural hub.

Appealing to Dimgba, they urged him to leverage his position to ensure the completion of these projects.

According to the community, “We urge you to try to see that NDDC delivers Owo Ala community from the Infrastructural decay ravaging the area”.

In response, Dimgba reassured the community that the new board is fully committed to fulfilling the commission’s mandate by finishing all stalled projects in the state.

He acknowledged the prevalence of abandoned projects, encompassing roads, water systems, schools, and healthcare facilities, not only in Abia but throughout the entire South-East region. Dimgba affirmed the management’s decision to prioritize the completion of these existing projects rather than initiating new ones.
