The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has strongly criticized the federal government’s decision to increase electricity tariffs by 300 percent, describing it as not only insensitive but also a blatant disregard for the citizens’ welfare.
Muhammed Ishaq, the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, voiced this condemnation in a statement released on Wednesday. He highlighted that the new policy would lead to electricity prices soaring from N68 to N200 per kilowatt-hour.
The PRP emphasized that this drastic hike, following the removal of fuel subsidies and the significant devaluation of the Naira, has already heightened the cost of living and exacerbated the hardships faced by Nigerians. They deemed it an unjust burden on an already struggling populace.
Expressing disbelief at the government’s imposition of such burdensome policies on a nation already grappling with numerous challenges, the PRP called for a reconsideration of the decision. They urged authorities to prioritize the well-being of citizens and seek alternative solutions that do not exacerbate their suffering.
The party stressed that the current economic climate necessitates empathy, understanding, and collective efforts to uplift the people, rather than policies that further plunge them into hardship.
It added: “As a party that champions the welfare of the people, we express our deep concern and share the shock felt by millions of Nigerians who are grappling with the harsh realities of survival.
“This decision by the government is not only insensitive but also demonstrates a blatant disregard for the plight of the citizens.
“The removal of fuel subsidies has already made life unbearable for Nigerians, and the additional burden of a 300% increase in electricity tariffs is a merciless and ruthless policy at a time when the majority of the population is struggling to meet their basic needs like food.
“It is unimaginable that the government would impose such life-frustrating policies on a nation that is already on its knees.”
