The chairman of Sardauna Local Government Council in Taraba State, Mohammed Umar, has implemented a curfew in Gembu, the administrative headquarters of the council.
The curfew, slated to run from 8 pm to 5 am starting on Monday, was instated in response to the arrest and subsequent death of a suspect by the Civil Defence in the area.
The deceased, Haliru Waziri, was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse by the Civil Defence following his arrest, an incident that has sparked significant controversy.
In a statement released on Monday to journalists by the chairman’s Special Adviser on Media, Marvellous Heli, the decision to impose the curfew was aimed at restoring peace in the council amidst the tensions arising from the suspect’s death.
The timing of the curfew, as indicated in the statement, was chosen to accommodate the Muslim faithful observing Ramadan.
The council chairman reassured the community of his administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents, regardless of their tribal, religious, or political affiliations.
Previously, the Civil Defence had claimed that the deceased was involved in robbery activities, which had reportedly caused distress among the locals.
As of the time of this report, heavily armed security personnel had been deployed to the town to prevent any further disturbances of the peace.
