Finally, Niger Republic opens border with Nigeria one week after President Tinubu’s orders

After a week of President Tinubu’s orders, Niger Republic has finally reopened its border with Nigeria.

The border closure occurred on July 26, 2023, following a coup that removed Niger’s president, Mohammed Bazoum.

Announced by the junta leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, the reopening took place at midnight on Friday. This decision follows President Tinubu’s directive to reopen Nigeria’s side of the border.

The border between the two countries spans 1,600 kilometers, crossing through seven Nigerian states: Kebbi, Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno.

During its recent session in Abuja, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) approved lifting sanctions on Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, which were imposed after military takeovers.

Local communities on both sides of the border have welcomed this development, believing it will alleviate the hardships faced by citizens on either side.
