Just In: Senate passes Student Loan bill

The Senate has approved the Student Loan, Access to Higher Education Act 2024 after deliberating on the report presented by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

Senator Muntari Dandutse, the committee’s chairman, introduced the report during the plenary session. Last week, President Bola Tinubu forwarded the bill to the National Assembly for consideration and passage.

To expedite the process, the Upper Legislative chamber suspended relevant sections of its standing rules and referred the bill to the Committee of the Whole for review.

Following discussions on the bill, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred it to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative scrutiny and requested a report within one week.

The bill aims to facilitate access to higher education for financially disadvantaged Nigerians by offering interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund established under the Act to ensure educational opportunities for all citizens.
