Southerners benefit from North East Development Commission – Onuigbo

Sam Onuigbo, the South East representative on the Board of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), emphasized that southerners, including Igbo residents, are benefiting from the Commission’s initiatives.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Onuigbo highlighted that beyond the North East populace, Igbo communities residing and conducting businesses in the region are also experiencing the positive impacts of NEDC’s establishment.

He underscored that the NEDC’s mandate, initiated by the Federal Government, encompasses the rehabilitation, resettlement, and reconstruction of areas affected by insurgency. Additionally, it aims to address challenges such as the Lake Chad crisis, cater to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), combat illiteracy, and foster regional transformation.

Onuigbo noted the widespread destruction suffered by buildings and businesses, including those owned by Igbos, during the height of insurgency in the North East. He expressed satisfaction in witnessing a significant reduction in insecurity across the region, owing to governmental initiatives and international support.

According to him, both South Easterners and locals in the North East now benefit from enhanced security measures in various parts of the region, reflecting tangible progress in the region’s stability.

“Our people who are living and doing business in the North East, their houses and businesses were destroyed alongside those of the indigenes. Every destruction in the North East affect the South East.

“We will contribute to the development of the North East. We have our people working and living in the North East,” he said.
