One soldier killed, another injured by suspected herders in Benue

Suspected armed herdsmen reportedly attacked troops deployed to Ochumekwu community in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State. Major General Sunday Iserihen Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), confirmed the incident to the media in Makurdi on Monday.

During the attack, one soldier lost his life, and another sustained injuries. In retaliation, the troops reportedly killed three and injured several of the suspected herders. The military operation also resulted in the recovery of one AK-47 rifle and rounds of ammunition from the assailants.

Major General Igbinonwanhia disclosed that OPWS is currently conducting a clearance operation to eliminate suspected armed foreign herders who have encroached upon Kwande Local Government Area of the state.

It is worth noting that in February, a similar incident occurred in Agatu local government, where suspected herders ambushed troops, resulting in the death of one soldier and injuries to two others.
