Atlético Madrid Secure Home Victory Against Real Betis Despite Late Scare

Seeking to capitalize on their nearly flawless home record in the league this season, Atlético wasted no time asserting dominance as they took the lead within just seven minutes. Mario Hermoso initiated the play by winning the ball in Betis territory, surging forward as the ball found its way to Memphis Depay on the right flank. Depay swiftly delivered a low cross towards Hermoso, but Héctor Bellerín intercepted, inadvertently setting off a sequence that saw the ball deflect off Germán Pezzella, then goalkeeper Rui Silva, ultimately finding the net off the post.

Atlético continued to apply relentless pressure on the hosts. Silva showcased his agility with a commendable double save to deny Depay, and shortly after, Álvaro Morata was awarded a penalty by VAR in the 25th minute after being fouled by Silva. However, Silva redeemed himself by diving the correct way to thwart Morata’s attempt, subsequently saving two rebounds. Nevertheless, Morata seized the opportunity to rectify his miss before halftime. A cleared corner fell to De Paul at the edge of the box, whose shot was parried by Silva, only for Morata to nod in the rebound. Betis struggled to make an impact, with their best chance being Riad’s header from a corner easily collected by Jan Oblak as the halftime whistle blew.

Oblak continued to showcase his prowess early in the second half, denying Willian José’s header after a precise cross, but he couldn’t prevent Betis from equalizing just after the hour mark. Johnny Cardoso played a square pass to William Carvalho 25 yards out, who took his time to curl a spectacular shot into the top corner, marking his first goal of the season.

As the game entered its final 15 minutes, Oblak played a pivotal role in Atlético maintaining their lead. He thwarted an effort from Ayoze Perez before brilliantly tipping Gabriel’s deflected strike onto the post, ensuring Atlético secured a crucial victory ahead of their midweek second leg against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, Betis saw their five-match unbeaten streak come to an end, still unable to secure an away win against a top-half team this season.
