The Nigerian Army has announced an increase in the Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) for its personnel from N1,200 to N1,500 per day.
The RCA takes care of the feeding of Nigerian military personnel in lieu of central feeding, where this is available.
The RCA allowance is applicable under certain conditions, such as military personnel on residential courses at military institutions outside their normal place of abode, those on 24-hour guard, hospital admission in military hospitals, approved military exercises and operations, and escort or temporary duty lasting 24 hours or more outside their duty station.
The move is in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s commitment to transforming the army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force. The RCA increase is part of his ongoing commitment to the welfare of troops and the continuous enhancement of their operational capabilities to build morale to a very high battle-winning level.
All formations and unit commanders have been directed to reflect the review of the RCA by enhancing the feeding of their troops. The monthly sustenance for February 2024 has been worked with the new rate by the department.
Reports had emerged in July 2023 that the army approved the review of the monthly ration allowance from N1,000 to N1,200 for its personnel. This latest increase comes amidst security challenges the military is currently facing in most parts of the country.
Despite soldiers putting their lives on the line and abandoning their families, they have been lamenting poor feeding, poor salaries, poor medical treatment, and poor welfare packages in general.
