Many Nigerian fans have been left frustrated after they discovered that the tickets they purchased to watch the final match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations between the Super Eagles and the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire were counterfeits.
The well-organised AFCON competition has been tainted by the unavailability of match tickets due to the activities of hoarders which has led to soaring prices.
Our correspondent has now learnt that many people have consequently been defrauded.
Among those affected are Wisdom Lucky and Tobi Emmanuel, who shelled out 50,000 CFA each, equivalent to more than N100,000, only to be informed that their tickets were invalid.
Emmanuel expressed his dismay, recounting the shocking experience he said he had now been denied the opportunity of watching his darling Super Eagles live.
“We got to the gate for validation and the issuance of the main papers, but we were shocked when all our tickets returned invalid. I spent 50,000 CFA, which is more than N100,000, but what I bought was fake.”
Lucky, a member of a group that journeyed by road from Lagos to Abidjan, shared a similar unfortunate fate.
The group, consisting of 14 supporters, paid 25,000 CFA each for tickets, only to discover they had fallen victim to fraudsters peddling fake tickets.
“They sold fake tickets to us. It is painful. Many Nigerians are facing the same challenges, and they have done this to also deny us entry into the stadium, you can notice that you hardly see people wearing our jerseys here, ” he lamented.
