Hardship: States in Nigeria risk total collapse amid rising hunger, unemployment, Japa – Report

A recent survey revealed that thirty-six states in Nigeria are at risk of descending into a state of stagnation, marked by increasing unemployment, widespread hunger, involuntary emigration (Japa), and the proliferation of illicit economic activities. The findings are documented in the Pcl State Performance Index report.

The report emphasizes that unemployment stands out as the most critical risk factor that states need to address to pave the way for significant growth. Furthermore, it highlights the concerning lack of food security, with hunger affecting a broad spectrum of states across Nigeria.

“Medium-Risk Factors: Collapse of public institutions (52 per cent), the proliferation of illicit economic activities (49 per cent), and large-scale involuntary emigration (Japa) (46 per cent).

“Low-Risk Factors: Spread of infectious diseases (31 per cent), the collapse of public institutions (25 per cent), and large-scale involuntary emigration (20 per cent),” the report stated.
