The Niger State Government has declared the upgrade of 270 out of 1,800 Primary Healthcare Centers into model focal institutions across the state. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to healthcare delivery in the 25 local government areas.
Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare in the state, made this announcement during a stakeholders meeting with Directors of Health in the 25 Local Government areas of the State in Minna.
The decision to upgrade these healthcare centers follows the transition of the State Primary Healthcare Agency (SPC) into a full-fledged Ministry by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, with the objective of improving healthcare services across the local government areas of the state.
He stated that “Out of the existing 1,800 Primary health care facilities in the State, the Niger state government is partnering with development partners and about 270 of such facilities are being upgraded to focal centres to serve as model pilot schemes in the state”.
The commissioner also disclosed that the state government has approved the release of N300m to be disbursed to the 274 wards of the 25 LGs’ primary health directorate for the immediate purchase of health consumables and other logistics for smooth operations.
He said, “Presently, we have set up a baseline study to take a holistic survey of all the existing Primary Healthcare centres across the state to ascertain areas of need, staffing and equipment for optimal service delivery for people of the state”.
