The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, has appealed to the Ogun State Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, for prompt justice in cases of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). During her visit to the Chief Judge’s office on Monday, Adeleye emphasized that swift justice for victims of sexual assaults would significantly contribute to deterring antisocial behaviours.
In a statement, the Commissioner commended the Chief Judge for the state’s judicial service’s excellence in implementing laws, dispensing justice, and upholding the constitution. Adeleye expressed the purpose of her visit, seeking a prompt response to cases of SGBV and family matters, while also advocating for due diligence in the adoption process.
The statement said, “Adeleye who advocated for a special court for SGBV cases as the only way a survivor could get justice, also said there should be documentation of sexual assault offenders to serve as a deterrent to others.”
During the visit, Chief Judge Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu reiterated the Judiciary’s dedication to providing necessary legal advice and support through legal aids. This commitment aims to protect individuals’ rights while establishing standards for the equitable enforcement of the law to reduce societal vices.
Addressing the delays in some cases related to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and family matters, Hon. Justice Dipeolu urged Social Welfare Officers to fulfill their duties. She emphasized the importance of enlightening parents, relatives, and witnesses about the necessity of supporting survivors during court proceedings, as this is crucial for victims to obtain justice.
Regarding child adoption cases, Justice Dipeolu highlighted the importance of addressing loose ends and conducting due diligence in both the judicial and ministry processes. This approach is essential for ensuring the safety and welfare of the children involved.
