Kaduna police arrest bandit gunrunner

Operatives from the Kaduna State Police Command apprehended a suspected gunrunner and seized ammunition in the state on Tuesday, as confirmed by a statement from the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan. The arrest of the suspect marks another achievement in the ongoing efforts to combat crime and criminal activities in the state.

The police spokesperson, Hassan, identified the suspect as Musa Yusuf, hailing from Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. According to the statement, Yusuf was en route to deliver ammunition to a bandit known as ‘Emir’ in the Zurmi forest. However, police operatives from the Divisional Police Headquarters in Zaria intercepted and successfully apprehended him.

He said, “The arrest was made on January 17, 2024, at 20:30 hours when police officers from Divisional Police Headquarters Tudun Wada, Zaria Local Government Area of the State, on tactical operation duty, accosted a certain Musa Yusuf of Zurmi LGA of Zamfara State, who was on a commercial motorcycle and in possession of a suspicious handbag.

“The suspect disembarked from the motorcycle, abandoned his bag and attempted to escape but was chased and apprehended and when a search of his handbag was conducted, 202 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm live ammunition were retrieved.

“Early inquisition revealed that Musa Yusuf was on an errand for a bandit alias Emir in Zurmi forest. He was to receive the ammunition at Bakin Kogi in Kauru LGA of Kaduna State and convey the same to the said bandit.
“He has since accomplished the first stage of the mission by collecting the ammunition but was intercepted before delivering by the ever-vigilant police officers attached to Tudun Wada Zaria Division. Investigation is still ongoing and concerted efforts are being made to arrest his accomplices after which case will be charged to court.”

The police spokesman said the state Commissioner of Police, A.D Ali, commended the police officers and called for more visibility policing while charging them to rid the state of criminal elements.
