NFF president blasts Eagles after disappointing draw with E-Guinea

The NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed his dissatisfaction with the Super Eagles after they managed only a 1-1 draw against the underdog Equatorial Guinea in their inaugural AFCON Group A match in Abidjan.

The Super Eagles’ lackluster performance, marked by a comeback from a goal down, left much to be desired, particularly with their failure to capitalize on numerous clear-cut chances during the game.

Gusau, accompanied by the leader of the Presidential delegation, George Akume, and Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, along with other high-ranking officials, visited the Super Eagles dressing room to convey his disappointment. He criticized the team for not delivering their best on the field despite the significant support they’ve received from the Federal Government.

Expressing his frustration, Gusau questioned the players’ commitment to the national team, stating, “After all the things the Government has done to support the team, you couldn’t play well. Is this how you play at your various clubs in Europe?” The NFF president even hinted at the possibility of introducing new players to the squad, perhaps to make a statement in front of the accompanying VIPs.

In contrast, Coach Jose Peseiro defended his team, expressing pride in their performance during the match.

However, insiders revealed that the players were far from pleased with the “harsh” words from the NFF president, asserting that they are yet to benefit from the government’s support, as they have not received their payments.

It was disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved 12 Billion Naira to settle outstanding bonuses and allowances owed to the Super Eagles and other sports teams that have recently represented the country.
