S’African billionaire displaces Dangote as Africa’s richest man

South African business magnate Johann Rupert has overtaken Nigerian tycoon Aliko Dangote to claim the title of Africa’s wealthiest individual, as per Forbes Magazine’s latest list. Additionally, Nigerian billionaires Rabiu Abdulsamad and Mike Adenuga no longer hold their positions in the billionaire rankings released by the financial publication.

Forbes’ Daily Billionaires ranking platform, which tracks daily fluctuations in the net worth of high-net-worth individuals globally, indicated that Aliko Dangote slid to the second position as his wealth decreased from $13.5 billion in 2023 to $9.5 billion at the beginning of 2024.

Mike Adenuga’s wealth placed him in the tenth position, while Patrice Motsepe, previously among the top ten in 2023, did not make the list of the wealthiest individuals in 2024.

A notable shift in the Forbes list of Africa’s richest people is the absence of any women in the top ten at the beginning of the year.

The decline in Dangote’s wealth can be attributed to the devaluation of the Naira and other economic challenges.

In the 2024 rankings, Johann Rupert & Family’s wealth decreased from $10.7 billion to $10.3 billion, securing the top spot as Africa’s richest, surpassing the long-standing African richest, Aliko Dangote, whose wealth dropped from $13.5 billion to $9.5 billion.

Here is the updated list of Africa’s richest individuals (Rank, Name, and Net worth):

1. Johann Rupert & Family – $10.3 billion

2. Aliko Dangote – $9.5 billion

3. Nicky Oppenheimer & Family – $8.3 billion
