During an urgent meeting held at the party’s headquarters in Akure, the State Working Committee (SWC) of the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officially confirmed Tola Alabere as the acting state chairman.
Alabere, previously the party’s deputy chairman, assumed this new responsibility following the alleged suspension of Fatai Adams as chairman earlier in the week.
Amidst internal turmoil over leadership disputes within the state chapter, the SWC, composed of party leaders, endorsed Alabere’s appointment after 11 members purportedly suspended Adams.
The accusations against Adams cited alleged involvement in activities detrimental to the PDP’s reputation and engaging in anti-party actions.
However, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, issued a statement refuting Adams’ controversial suspension, highlighting the SWC’s lack of authority to suspend the chairman without consulting the national body.
The state chapter defended its stance, citing the party’s constitution, asserting that all levels possess the authority to discipline members acting against the party’s interests.
According to the state chapter, nine out of the 11 SWC members signed the suspension letter, reflecting a lack of confidence in Adams’ leadership.
Following the emergency meeting, the State Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, clarified that Alabere’s appointment adhered to the party’s constitution and followed due process.
“In line with recent developments in the PDP, you will recall that a few days ago, the former PDP chairman in Ondo State, Fatai Adams, was suspended by the State Working Committee in line with our constitution.
“The State Working Committee can take a position, and they have the responsibility in line with the party.
“The State Executive Working Committee, which consists of the state local government party chairmen and other executive members, has ratified the position of the Working Committee to suspend Fatai Adams, and in furtherance of our constitution, there should not be a vacuum in the administration of the party.”
