Plateau attacks similar to Rwanda genocide – North Central governors

Governors from the six North Central states, on Tuesday, collectively urged the Federal Government to take decisive action towards resolving the recurring attacks and fatalities in Plateau State.

Following reports of gunmen assaulting 25 communities across three local government areas of Plateau State on Christmas Eve, resulting in the tragic loss of over 150 lives, the Governor of Nasarawa State and Chairman of the North Central Governors’ Forum, Abdullahi Sule, emphasized the need for a more permanent solution. He specifically highlighted that labeling the events in Plateau as mere herder-farmer clashes would be inaccurate, likening the situation to the tragic events in Rwanda.

Governor Sule, alongside governors from Niger and Benue states, Mohammed Bago and Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, respectively, conveyed their condolences during a visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang in Jos.

He said, “We cannot allow a few people for selfish reasons to come in and destroy all of us.

“This is not about Fulani. It is about criminals and we are asking the Federal Government to assist us and deal with the problem.”

Sule expressed deep concern over the prolonged series of attacks in Plateau, stressing their presence in Jos to stand in solidarity with Governor Mutfwang during this time of mourning.

In response, Governor Mutfwang appreciated the governors’ support and concern, underlining the people of Plateau’s earnest desire for unity and progress. He characterized the perpetrators of these acts as terrorists, kidnappers, and thieves, emphasizing the gravity of their actions.
