The civil society group, Peace in the South-East Project (PISE-P), is actively involving influential Nigerians in its ongoing campaign for a non-violent approach to addressing the prolonged security issues in the region.
Mrs. Mary Ikoku, the Head of Media for PISE-P, highlighted this initiative in a statement titled “Tackling Insecurity in South-East,” provided to journalists in Umuahia on Thursday.
Ikoku emphasized the group’s extensive advocacy efforts among prominent figures in the Southeast and across Nigeria, advocating for the swift resolution of the security crisis “through peaceful dialogues”. The aim is to permanently address the dangers in the region through non-kinetic means.
“The non-kinetic approach will take into cognizance the culture of the people, their behavioral pattern and we say ‘engage them in dialogue’.
“It will also help to ensure a better understanding of what their issues are and address them to bring back South-East to the glorious past of how it used to be,” she said.
She stressed that the group was convinced that insecurity in the zone was intensified by the Federal Government’s failure to respond to the grievances and concerns of the people of the region through dialogue.
“We blame the problem on the lack of appropriate Federal Government’s response to the popular grievances raised by individuals and groups from the region,” the statement added.
She, therefore, emphasized the need to adopt dialogue between the state and non-state actors to end the conflict.
