Henry Mbachu, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing the Awka South 1 constituency, expressed deep concern over the widespread poverty in Nigeria.
Following his visit to various markets within his constituency, the lawmaker highlighted the significant impact of poverty on numerous Nigerians. He emphasized that if this poverty persists, it poses a serious threat to the national security, stability, and unity of the country.
Mbachu emphasized the urgent need for a more sustainable approach to addressing the escalating rate of poverty across the nation.
“My engagements have been focused more on the people, especially the poor who live below the poverty line. The level of poverty and inequality in Nigeria today threatens national security, stability and unity.
“That is why we are touring some markets in this constituency, distributing seed capitals to local market men and women.
“Well-to-do individuals should be done with ‘dorime’ and 21 years old liquor. The cost of one bottle of exotic drink can end excruciating poverty in many families. This is the time to change approach,” he implored.
He emphasizes that creating more job opportunities for the underprivileged and implementing economic and institutional reforms for efficiency would elevate incomes.
He also called on young people to come out and assist the government in the fight against corruption by being active partners in monitoring projects, development and growth of their local communities.
