INEC is contemplating organizing bye-elections and rerun polls nationwide on Thursday, February 1, 2024, aiming to fill legislative gaps at both state and federal levels. Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the commission’s chairman, revealed this during a gathering with political party leaders in anticipation of the elections.
Following legal proceedings, courts have instructed the commission to hold rerun elections in 34 federal and state constituencies, comprising one Senate seat, 11 federal constituencies, and 22 state constituencies. Prof. Yakubu specified that these elections would address vacancies resulting from resignations or the passing of incumbent members.
The specific date for the election and a detailed schedule will be finalized subsequent to discussions with party leaders, as stated by Prof. Yakubu at the meeting.
