The Kwara State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has mobilized 950 personnel for dedicated Christmas and New Year operations, aiming to ensure road safety.
This task force comprises officers and marshals, among whom are 350 Special Marshals, 120 first responders, and includes a fleet of 40 patrol vehicles, two power bikes, four ambulances, four private tow trucks, and a substantial 70-ton tow-truck. This initiative, known as “Operation Zero Tolerance to Road Traffic Crashes,” will run from December 15, 2023, to January 15, 2024.
The operation’s primary goal is to significantly reduce road accidents and injuries by swiftly addressing obstructions and promptly aiding crash victims.
The Corps explained that this specialized operation is essential due to the anticipated surge in vehicular movements across Kwara State during the festive season. This influx necessitates measures to tackle traffic-related challenges that may arise.
The Public Education Officer of the Kwara Sector Command, Basambo Olayinka Busari, highlighted that the State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Stephen E Dawulung, has directed personnel to oversee traffic control in key areas within Ilorin township and major cities during this period.
Commander Dawulung urged motorists to adhere to traffic regulations, avoid speeding, overloading, using phones while driving, and operating vehicles in poor condition. He stressed the importance of prioritizing safety over haste and financial gains, advocating for adequate rest during journeys.
To raise awareness and ensure smooth traffic flow, the FRSC Kwara State Command plans public enlightenment campaigns in interstate motor parks, religious centers, and markets. Additionally, special traffic control operations will be conducted in Ilorin, with three traffic control camps established in strategic locations to ease congestion.
To swiftly respond to emergencies, heavy tow trucks, ambulances, and rescue teams will be stationed along major highways.
This operation aligns with the Federal Road Safety Corps’ 2023 Corporate Strategic Goals, particularly aiming for a 5% reduction in road crash fatalities and injuries.
