A student in the second year of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ibadan was apprehended by the university’s security personnel for allegedly sexually assaulting a first-year student on campus.
According to information gathered by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the incident was reported to the institution’s authorities. The victim, a fresher, had joined others in a night study session preparing for an upcoming exam.
Due to a power outage in the lecture theater where they were studying, the victim moved to the Students’ Union building to rest. Unfortunately, it was there that the suspect allegedly assaulted her.
The victim recounted that she awoke to a touch and attempted to scream, but the suspect restrained her by holding down her neck, rendering her unable to call for help. Her fortune turned when another student walked in, causing the suspect to flee.
As a result of the assault, the victim suffered injuries to her neck, lips (due to a bite), and her private area.
Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, assuring that investigations were underway to address the matter.
“Yes. He (the suspect) was with the security unit until late yesterday (Tuesday). I’m not sure he has even been released,” Akinpelu said
She stated that the act was reported to the Dean of Students Affairs, adding that he had since swung into action.
“The veracity of the allegation will be known upon completion of the investigation,” she added.
