Nigerian Govt unveils plans to tackle smuggling of nuclear materials

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has revealed plans to initiate a Radiological and Nuclear Detection Program geared towards bolstering the country’s security against the smuggling of nuclear materials.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, announced this initiative during the inauguration of a 4-Day Capacity Building Workshop conducted by the World Customs Organization (WCO) at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College in Gwagwalada on Tuesday.

Representing the CGC at the workshop, Assistant Comptroller General Malanta Yusuf emphasized the program’s significance. He expressed optimism that it would equip participants with the necessary technical expertise to identify and counter the illegal trafficking of radiological and nuclear materials.

This proactive step aims to strengthen cross-border security, exposing participants to operational challenges while deepening their comprehension of the multifaceted roles associated with this innovative approach.

Yusuf praised the collective efforts of Customs leadership, highlighting the dedication to innovation as a crucial factor in enhancing the Service’s overall performance.

Adebiyi reiterated the importance of the training organized by the WCO, ensuring that officers would acquire cutting-edge knowledge and skills to tackle these security threats effectively.

“We are trying to make sure that such training organized by the World Customs Organization benefits our Officers because clearly, the Comptroller-General has put too much effort into ensuring that innovation is one of the key elements,” he said.
