A former Students Union President of the University of Benin, Comrade Michael Oshiobugie, has officially announced his intention to run for the 2024 Edo State governorship election under the banner of the Labour Party.
Appearing at the party’s headquarters in Benin on Wednesday to formalize his candidacy, the engineer-turned-politician emphasized his commitment to eradicating oppression if allowed to govern the state.
Oshiobugie, who previously led UNIBEN in 1996, pledged to leverage his technical expertise to drive prosperity in Edo. He highlighted his substantial experience gained in the construction and oil industries while working across different global regions.
He said, “I have rich technical and engineering experience which I believe is required at this difficult time in our history. The state needs a man who can turn around the economy and I am the man to do that.
“As an engineer and governor of this state, it behooves me to use the skills I have acquired to ensure that we make gas available as much as possible because Edo has a rich gas deposit. Therefore, the technology to transform this gas, I have it, while other resources that can make the state strong will also be tapped into.”
In response, Kelly Ogbaloi, the state chairman of the Labour Party, acknowledged and accepted Oshiobugie’s candidacy, recognizing his impressive resume. He extended his best wishes to the aspirant, expressing the party’s openness to his candidacy.
