In a surprising turn of events during Monday’s session at the Rivers State House of Assembly, 27 lawmakers, previously perceived as loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, have officially defected from the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tensions within the 32-member House reached a boiling point, resulting in a split as the lawmakers, once united under the PDP banner, found themselves at odds with each other. This schism has exposed the deep-seated political conflict between supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and those aligned with Wike, his predecessor and political mentor.
A reliable source close to Wike confirmed the defection, emphasizing, “The FCT Minister is expected to make a move any moment from now.” The source contested the reported number, asserting that 27 lawmakers, not 26, made the shift. Additionally, the source highlighted Governor Sim Fubara’s role as the undisputed leader of the PDP in Rivers State, dispelling any uncertainties surrounding his political standing.
