A Nigerian, David Abodunde, has been taken into custody by the United Kingdom police in connection with the alleged murder of his wife, Taiwo Owoeye. Abodunde, a native of Ekiti State, is accused of strangling Owoeye, a former ophthalmic nurse at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, to death in their Suffolk apartment on Tuesday, November 28.
The tragic incident occurred just a day after Owoeye, a mother of three and a nurse in the UK, had reportedly reported an assault by her husband to the police. Subsequent to her complaint, the police visited their home and discovered Owoeye lifeless in the living room during the following day’s visit. Paramedics, upon arrival at the scene, confirmed her death.
David Abodunde, who was reportedly inside the apartment with the deceased, was immediately arrested by the police. The couple, married in 2016, had relocated to the UK, with Taiwo moving in 2022 and David joining her earlier this year.
In a Facebook post, the deceased’s brother, Alex Owoeye, claimed that the police investigation declared David as the sole perpetrator of the murder. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns about domestic violence, prompting further scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding the case.
“This is to officially announce the painful exit of my dear sister, Nurse Owoeye Taiwo Morenikeji, married to Abodunde David Olubunmi of Ipoti Ekiti. According to the Suffolk Police in the UK and the available documents and records sent to us via mail and direct conversations from the UK Police, after thoroughly conducted investigations, despite being caught in the act, he (the husband) was declared the sole murderer of his wife (my sister),” he wrote.
Owoeye stated that the three children of the couple had been taken into the protective custody of the UK social services.
He also urged his family members to keep calm while assuring them that justice would be served in due course.
