Police warn against jungle justice as suspected motorcycle thief is lynched in Abia

The Abia State Police Command has emphasized its stance against any form of vigilante justice in the region, urging the public to report suspected criminals for proper investigation instead of resorting to lynching.

Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), reiterated this stance during a radio awareness program following reports of vigilante actions in various parts of the State. She specifically addressed the recent case of Ikechi Kalu, a man allegedly involved in the theft of a motorcycle in one of Arochukwu LGA’s clans.

The late Kalu, a father of one, was accused of motorcycle theft in November and subsequently apprehended by local youths who took the law into their own hands. He was purportedly “convicted” by the group and tragically set ablaze using tires.

A circulating video of the incident on social media portrayed the victim being assaulted before the act of vigilante justice took place.

Chinaka urged Abia residents to report any suspected criminal activity or violations of the law to the police for appropriate legal procedures. She emphasized that individuals engaging in vigilante actions have been apprehended, with further arrests anticipated.
