Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, clarified his decision to rush onto the touchline and address Anthony Martial during their recent 1-0 loss to Newcastle.
Martial faced challenges in making a notable impact at St James’ Park and was substituted in the second half, replaced by Rasmus Hojlund after a mere 61 minutes on the field.
Struggling through a lackluster season, the Frenchman has managed only one goal and one assist across 12 Premier League appearances.
During the Newcastle match, Ten Hag was observed passionately communicating with Martial, who, in turn, engaged in a discussion with the Dutch manager.
When asked about the incident after the game, Ten Hag said: “It’s not about Antony Martial. It’s about the team. I tried to energize the team, to get a reaction from the team.
“In this moment, we had a tough period. When you are coaching you are a little bit more aggressive and that is normal.”
