Abdul Samad Rabiu, the chairman of BUA Group, has declined an appointment offered to him by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the party’s finance standing committee.
The APC had released a list of its standing committees on Friday, with Ajibola Basiru as the chair of the establishment committee. Other committees include the conflict and reconciliation committee headed by Bisi Akande, publicity committee led by Felix Morka, and finance and intergovernmental committees headed by Uguru Ofoke and Emma Eneukwu, respectively.
Rabiu’s name was listed on the finance committee, alongside A. A Rano, Zach Adedeji, chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, among others.
However, the BUA group issued a statement shortly after the list was released, saying that Rabiu was not consulted by the ruling party before his name was added to the list. The statement further stated that the businessman had “consistently adopted an apolitical stance over the years”.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to the APC for considering our chairman for such a distinguished role. This acknowledgement reflects the recognition of his commitment, and that of BUA Group, to economic prosperity and the development of our dear nation, Nigeria,” the statement reads.
“With respect to this, we wish to inform the publishers, our partners, stakeholders, and the general public that Mr. Rabiu has decided to graciously decline the nomination/appointment.
“This decision is made in light of the fact that he was not previously consulted regarding his inclusion in the list and his inability to commit time due to his demanding schedule.”
Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, the ruling party had yet to react to Rabiu’s rejection of the committee’s membership.
In the statement on the party’s social media page, the inauguration of the committees is scheduled to be held on December 6 at its national secretariat in Abuja.
