Kaduna Electric nabs suspected energy thief

Kaduna Electric reported a nocturnal operation conducted on November 24 resulting in the apprehension of Opafola Abiodun, a suspected electricity pilferer.

In a statement released on Thursday and signed by the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Abdulaziz Abdullahi, Kaduna Electric revealed the arrest.

The company alleged that Abiodun had illicitly tapped electricity from the 11KV Leventis Feeder and was detected with an external bypass on meter number 04190482713.

Mr. U.A. Gumel, the Head of Unit for Non-MD Metering, mentioned that Opafola had been disconnected from the power supply on September 28 and accrued a charge of ₦104,823.

Gumel emphasized that a booking letter, duly acknowledged by Abubakar with the GSM number 07056646853 on November 29, validated the charges as a legally binding document.

Gumel also pointed out that instead of settling the outstanding amount, Abiodun resorted to illegal reconnection, primarily during the evening and night hours.

“Surveillance personnel on a routine monitoring operation caught him red-handed on November 24; prompt action was taken, and the matter was reported to the police, leading to his arrest.

“The case is currently under the jurisdiction of Kaduna Electric’s security unit, preparing for prosecution.

“In response to the repeated offenses, a second charge of ₦92,774.39 has been booked against the accused.

It stated that the incident underscored Kaduna Electric’s unwavering commitment to stopping illegal activities within its service area and ensuring a fair and lawful distribution of electricity to all customers.
