President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to leave Abuja for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Wednesday to participate in the COP28 Climate Summit.
This global summit, recognized as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), will witness the World Leaders’ Summit held on December 1 and 2, 2023, themed “Unite, Act, and Deliver.” President Tinubu will present a national statement, highlighting Nigeria’s perspectives on critical issues, including renewable energy and climate financing.
Given Nigeria’s susceptibility to severe climate change impacts like desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and the resulting national security concerns, President Tinubu aims to leverage this platform to advocate for increased financial and technical aid to developing nations.
He intends to remind developed nations of their commitment to providing $100 billion annually to support local initiatives addressing climate change-related challenges. Additionally, Tinubu plans to emphasize accountability among businesses and institutions, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable practices.
The Nigerian delegation at COP28 will actively pursue forging new bilateral partnerships for implementing Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.
During his stay in Dubai, President Tinubu will engage in key side events supporting his commitment to attracting foreign direct investment for enhancing wealth creation and revenue expansion in Nigeria.
The President, accompanied by senior government officials, will return to Abuja upon the summit’s conclusion, as stated by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity.
