Nigeria Customs hands over seized of illicit drugs to NDLEA

On Thursday, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, transferred confiscated illicit drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Abuja.

During the handover event, CGC Adeniyi announced a joint effort with NDLEA to address the urgent issue of drug abuse. The seizures spanned various commands including West Marine, Zone A (covering the entire South West), FOU Zone C in Ogun 1, and FOU Zone B, which encompasses ten states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The haul included 14,340 kilograms of Compressed Indian Hemp, 660 packs of Tramadol (225mg), 50 parcels of books, 292 Jumbo sacks, 1,461 compressed Indian Hemp, 1,765 packs of Indian hemp, 960 sacks (1kg each), 2,042 packets of D5, and other substances.

Adeniyi noted that five suspects were apprehended during the seizures, with one being granted administrative bail.

Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency commended the customs for their efforts in seizing the drugs. He emphasized the connection between drugs and the proliferation of crime in Nigeria, affirming that the seized substances would be promptly destroyed to prevent their circulation in society.

“Customs and NDLEA are setting the pace for what interagency collaboration should be.

“For every crime and criminality in Nigeria today, drugs play a significant role.

“We will not only take over the exhibit, but if there is a lead, we are ready to investigate. We ensure that we immediately destroy them. We are not going to give room for its circulation into society”, he stated.
