Kingsley Moghalu, former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has issued a stark warning about the disintegration of Nigeria’s judicial and electoral frameworks, highlighting the concerning implications for the country’s democratic aspirations.
Speaking via his X handle on Wednesday, Moghalu expressed deep concerns about the current state of these systems.
His statement comes amidst the controversy surrounding the Appeal Court’s ruling that invalidated Governor Abba Yusuf’s election in Kano State.
Despite reports of a certified true copy of the Appeal Court judgement affirming Yusuf’s victory, the initial judgement by the Kano election petition tribunal, which overturned Yusuf’s win, was set aside by the Court of Appeal due to its lack of merit.
Moghalu reacted strongly to this development, cautioning that the breakdown of Nigeria’s judiciary and electoral mechanisms is alarming. He emphasized that those benefiting from these systemic failures often become blinded by their advantages.
He wrote, “Nigeria’s judicial and electoral systems are collapsing. This has ominous implications for our aspirations for democracy.
Often, those who benefit from these systemic failures are intoxicated by their advantage. But, history tells us that longer term, the prognosis isn’t pretty.”
