Chaos erupted on Wednesday at Akute Bus Stop and Alagboole in Ogun State’s Ifo Local Government Area as a fierce clash unfolded between commercial motorcyclists and transport union tax collectors, known as Agbero, due to an increase in ticket prices.
Eyewitnesses reported the closure of shops and destruction of property as residents and traders hurried to find safety in the area.
A stranded commuter named Garba, speaking to PUNCH Metro, supported the motorcyclists’ cause, stating, “Raising their ticket price from N700 to N1400, given the fuel cost, is unjustifiable. How can they manage this hike? It’s unsustainable.”
While rumors suggested a possible fatality, verification couldn’t be made by our correspondent present at the clash.
The Ogun State Police Command, represented by Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola, couldn’t confirm any loss of life. However, they acknowledged property damage but were yet to ascertain its full extent.
”They (motorcyclists) can have a peaceful protest, and they can bring their complaints through their different unions to the police. This particular gathering is illegal,” Odutola said.
