Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has contradicted the widespread belief surrounding the removal of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.
Falana clarified that the Court of Appeal in Abuja actually upheld Yusuf’s election, overturning the decision made by the lower tribunal.
Speaking on the Arise News Primetime Show, he disclosed his examination of the Certified True Copy of the judgment and expressed dismay over the discrepancies found.
He highlighted that the majority judgment nullified the lower court’s decision, favored Yusuf in costs, and granted all the reliefs sought by the governor.
Falana advocated a return to the recommendations of the Justice Uwais Electoral Committee, stressing the necessity for a standardized approach to ensure elections truly represent the people’s will.
The lawyer criticized the practice of holding individuals accountable for the mistakes of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials. He urged the establishment of an Independent Electoral Offences Commission.
Additionally, Falana proposed restructuring INEC’s responsibilities, suggesting a dedicated focus on conducting elections while forming a separate commission specifically for handling electoral offenses and regulating political parties.
