On Tuesday, the Ogun State Government initiated the demolition of shanties and makeshift structures in Kara along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The task force emphasized that these shanties and unauthorized structures mar the appearance of the corridor and are perceived as havens for criminals in the vicinity.
The operation, led by Farouq Akintunde, the Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Environment, is part of an effort to establish the state as the leading industrial hub in Nigeria.
He noted, “Ogun State has a role to play in the economic advancement of the nation. No serious investor will come here and partner with us with all these kinds of shanties and garbage.”
Our correspondent, who was at the scene of the operation, observed that faeces and dirt littered the road median along the corridor and under the Kara Bridge.
Though there was mild opposition as some protesters were seen with sticks, the heavy presence of security agents such as policemen and operatives of the Ogun State Community Social Orientation and Safety Corps helped prevent any breakout of violence.
it was reported that the operation was going on smoothly as of the time this report was filed.
