The prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has urged President Bola Tinubu to pay no heed to the minority of Igbos expressing dissatisfaction over appointments.
Ohanaeze emphasized that an overwhelming 99 percent of the Igbo populace wholeheartedly endorses the Southeast Charter of Demands and insists on immediate attention from President Tinubu.
The Southeast Charter of Demands, which has been championed by Ohanaeze Ndigbo since June 2023, encompasses critical issues that necessitate swift resolution for the betterment of the Igbo people.
In a statement issued and signed by the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Tinubu is urged to heed the voice of the vast majority of Igbos and promptly address the Southeast Charter of Demands.
Isiguzoro warned that failure to do so will only deepen dissatisfaction and aggravate the grievances of the Igbo population.
He listed the demands to include:
Creation of Aba State:
Ohanaeze Ndigbo has been a longstanding advocate for the establishment of an additional state in the Southeast. The selection of Aba State has been thoughtfully deliberated and enjoys widespread support within the Igbo community.
Immediate Release of Nnamdi Kanu:
Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasizes the need for President Tinubu’s intervention to secure the timely release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, prior to December.
This act of mercy is vital for reestablishing tranquility and concord in the volatile Southeast, enabling our community to observe the Christmas and New Year festivities without apprehension.
Massive Developmental Projects:
Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls for the execution of impactful initiatives, including the development of a Deep Sea Port in Azumiri Blue River in Ukwa East LGA, Abia State, and the establishment of standard gauge railway networks linking key areas throughout the Southeast.
These endeavors will stimulate economic progress and alleviate the challenges stemming from the elimination of fuel subsidies.
Reconstruction of Federal Roads with Cement Technology:
The dilapidated state of federal roads in the Southeast is an urgent concern. Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls for the reconstruction of these roads using modern cement technology, ensuring durability and improved connectivity for our people.
Inclusion of Anambra, Enugu, Kogi States in Oil Derivation Allocations:
Ohanaeze Ndigbo underscores the immediate necessity of incorporating Anambra, Enugu, and Kogi states, officially recognized by the Buhari administration as oil-producing states within the Old Anambra River basin, into the beneficiaries of the 13% oil derivation monthly allocations. This inclusion is an issue of justice and equitable resource distribution.
President Tinubu should acknowledge that those advocating for greater appointments in the Federal Executive Council are employing an outdated elitist strategy to exploit the Igbo people, a practice that has persisted since 1999.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo strongly opposes this exploitative approach and stands against those seeking to undermine the interests of the Igbo nation.
