On Monday, the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) took the decision to close the State House of Assembly complex due to various concerns related to staff welfare.
This action aligns with the directive provided by the national body of the association, which led to lawmakers and other assembly staff being unable to access the building.
Miss Uduak Ebong Okon, the Chairperson of the state’s PASAN branch, clarified that this show of solidarity was necessary to emphasize to the state government the importance of addressing certain critical demands put forth by the association.
These demands include financial autonomy, legislative duty allowance, legislative salary structure, outfit allowance, PASAN legislative week, and staff training.
According to her, “this is a solidarity protest to impress it on the state government to heed to the demands of the association.
“Our demands are financial autonomy, legislative duty allowance, legislative salary structure, outfit allowance, PASAN legislative week and staff training.”
Jerry Otu, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, expressed his distress over the crippling impact of the strike on the Assembly’s activities.
