Speaking to his supporters at the Assembly Complex on Monday, embattled Governor Siminalayi Fubara refuted any wrongdoing justifying his impeachment.
As the House members, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, initiated the impeachment process, Fubara addressed his supporters, questioning the alleged offense warranting such action.
“I urge them to reveal any grounds for impeachment to the people of Rivers,” the governor declared. He reassured the people of Rivers of continued commitment to delivering democratic benefits. Fubara promised a future address to the press.”
The governor, who assured the people of the state of getting the dividends of democracy, said he would speak on the matter at the appropriate time.
We had earlier reported that there were gunshots and firing of teargas within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday as some lawmakers sat to begin an impeachment process on Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The lawmakers also suspended the leader of the House, Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor.
The development occurred hours after a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.
