The frozen fish traders in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, are considering ending their one-week strike on Monday. Their strike was initiated due to the escalating costs of their products over the past week.
In Ilorin, it has been observed that the price of various fish products has surged significantly. For instance, a carton of Shawa fish, which previously sold for N18,000, now commands a price of N35,000. Similarly, the popular ‘Panla’ fish, formerly priced at N15,000 per carton, now stands at N35,000, while salmon, locally known as ‘Alaran,’ has seen a price hike from N45,000 to N75,000 per carton.
Mama Alia, a fish fryer in the Ilorin metropolis, expressed deep concern about the drastic increase in the costs of the fish varieties they purchase for their business.
Lamenting, she said: “We are tired of the current increase in prices; we want government to wade into the situation.”
She noted that fish formerly sold at N100 will not cost N200, and the N50 fish will now cost N100. “There will be no more N20 fish,” she stressed.
