A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should face consequences if it fails to deliver credible elections to Nigerians in 2023. Speaking on Channels TV on Friday, Adegboruwa emphasized that there must be penalties for INEC if the electoral body does not deliver on its promises of credible elections.
Adegboruwa argued that the success of an election is not just determined by the figures but by the opinion of the people concerning election matters. He, therefore, suggested that if INEC fails Nigerians and reneges on its promises, there must be consequences for that failure.
Adegboruwa also noted that INEC should learn from the election petition process that it participated in from the Court of Appeal up to the Supreme Court, even opposing the views of the appellants.
He stated that knowing the consequence of its failure to deliver on its mandate will make the electoral umpire deliver on its promises to Nigerians.
Furthermore, Adegboruwa called on President Bola Tinubu to emulate the late President Musa Yar’Adua by admitting flaws in the election that brought him to power and deciding to carry out electoral reforms. He also suggested that the President should not have any role in the appointment of the Chairman of INEC, as well as Resident Electoral Commissioners.
