ICPC Chair: Senate confirms Musa Aliyu

The Senate has officially approved the nomination of Malam Musa Aliyu as the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

This decision was made during the Committee of the Whole session on Thursday, following a motion presented by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti).

Bamidele urged the Senate to consider President Bola Tinubu’s request for Aliyu’s confirmation as the ICPC Chairman, as stipulated in Section 3 (6) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Establishment Act of 2000.

Additionally, he encouraged the Senate to contemplate Tinubu’s request for the confirmation of the appointments of Mr. Saka Suleiman and Prof. Gaji Dantata as members of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.

This, he mentioned, aligns with the provisions of Section 154 (1) and (3) and paragraph 12 (f) of Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended.

Before the nominees were screened, the Senate temporarily suspended its rules to allow their entry into the chamber. Senator Abdullahi Gumel, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), led the nominees into the chamber.

During their screening, the nominees provided an overview of their career profiles and professional experiences.

Malam Musa Aliyu, currently serving as the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in Jigawa State, highlighted the extensive judicial reforms he initiated during his tenure as the state’s Attorney General in September 2019.

Subsequently, the Senate affirmed the appointments of Prof. Gaji Dantata and Mr. Saka Suleiman as members of the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) representing Kano and Kwara, respectively.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, emphasized that their appointments represented a call to serve and urged them not to disappoint the President and the Nigerian people while encouraging them to dedicate their best efforts to serving the country.
