Super Eagles’ forward, Umar Sadiq, is poised to bring an end to his goal-scoring dry spell that has extended for a staggering 416 days, with his last goal dating back to September 3, 2022, during his stint with Real Sociedad in a UEFA Champions League match against Benfica. This eagerly anticipated opportunity will arise as Sadiq takes the field on Tuesday, as reported by IWITNESSLIVE Sports.
Sadiq’s goal drought commenced following his last successful strike against Atletico Madrid. The barren run has persisted through the 11 games he’s participated in since recovering from a cruciate ligament injury.
Throughout the current season, Sadiq has predominantly made appearances as a substitute, featuring in ten games for Real Sociedad. The Spanish club will undoubtedly be banking on their forward to bolster his goal tally in the upcoming fixture, as they strive to maintain their lead in Group D, having already secured a win and a draw in their initial two matches.
In anticipation of his participation in this prestigious competition, Sadiq conveyed his excitement, stating, “It’s a dream for every footballer, and I’m living my dream. I hope to make my mark by scoring in the tournament as well.” As the football world watches with bated breath, Sadiq seeks to reignite his scoring prowess and contribute to his team’s ongoing success in the UEFA Champions League.
The La Liga side will be buoyed by a 2-0 victory over Salzburg on matchday two.
La Real had Mikel Oyarzabal and Brais Mendez’s goals in the opening 30 minutes to thank for the early advantage and they held on until the final whistle.
That triumph was Sociedad’s first Champions League group-stage victory since defeating Galatasaray in September 2003 (they got one point from 18 in the 2013-14 group phase).
The San Sebastian side travel to Lisbon looking to continue their unbeaten run in this season’s competition, but they must prepare for a barrage from a motivated side backed by the home support at Estadio da Luz.
While the unconvincing 1-0 victory over Real Mallorca last Saturday does little for optimism, La Real’s ambition to progress from Group D should fuel them at Benfica.
