In a video message, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a directive for a “complete siege” on the Gaza Strip, intensifying the military’s air strikes on the Palestinian territory. This move comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with the Gaza Strip already experiencing severe overcrowding, with a population of approximately 2.3 million people, according to reports from AFP.
In his video statement, Gallant announced, “We are putting a complete siege on Gaza, with no access to electricity, food, water, or gas—everything is closed off.”
The situation in southern Israel has become increasingly dire, with over 1,000 casualties reported since the incursion of Hamas militants across the border on Saturday. These militants engaged in violent actions in communities and towns near Gaza before Israeli security forces responded with military operations.
The intensification of the siege and airstrikes raises concerns about the well-being of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip, who are already grappling with limited access to basic necessities and a dire humanitarian situation. The conflict in the region has drawn international attention, with calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic efforts to address the escalating crisis.
An estimated 250 people were killed by Hamas gunmen at a music festival attended by young Israelis and foreigners near Kibbutz Reim, close to Gaza, according to an organisation that helped to recover the bodies.
“We are fighting animals and are acting accordingly,” Gallant said in Hebrew.
