The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Yobe State has confirmed the arrest of a 65-year-old man named Mohammed Baburam. He is alleged to have chained and starved his wife for an entire year in Potiskum.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSC Bala Garba, provided this information in an interview with reporters in Damaturu on Friday.
Images of the 40-year-old woman, who is a mother of four and was chained, went viral in the state, leading to demands from residents and civil society groups for the immediate arrest of Baburam.
Garba explained that Baburam was apprehended on Wednesday following a tip-off from the Dabo-Aliyu Stadium area, where both the suspect and his victim resided.
“ Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect only feeds his wife once every day.
”The suspect also said that he chained his wife because she has some mental health issues,” he said.
The spokesman said the command had drafted forensic experts and a doctor to ascertain the victim’s health status.
He said that the suspect would be charged in court after the investigation.
